The Roman Empire mined so much silver that at peak production they were mining 200 tonnes per year. This was 5 to 10 times larger than the combined amount of silver available to Medieval Europe & Abbasid Caliphate around 800 AD.

Hey Fediverse!

The @owncast project could really use some help! 🙏

At the moment the lead dev @gabek is having to handle an awful lot at once. The platform would be much more sustainable if there were more people on the team.

Everyone who wants to help is welcome, but of course there are some specific areas where help is especially welcome:

Please get in touch with @owncast or @gabek if you want to help out!

For those who don't know, OwnCast is a Twitch-style livestreaming and chat service for the Fediverse. You can follow OwnCast accounts from Mastodon etc and you will see a post in your timeline when the account goes live. There's a site about it at owncast.online and a directory of featured streams at directory.owncast.online

Boosts welcome!

~Open Source Security Tool of the Day~

Socket has been designed with the assumption that all open source packages may be malicious. Instead of searching for known vulnerabilities, it tries to detect signs of compromised packages and help detect supply chain attacks.

Nmap's XML result parse and NVD's CPE correlation to search CVE.

This script analyses the Nmap XML scanning results, parses each CPE context and correlates to search CVE on NIST. You can use that to find public vulnerabilities in services.

Opinions on hosting media on S3 storage behind a CDN, especially if the instance itself is hosted at home?

Oops: Password management software firm LastPass has suffered a data breach that led to the theft of source code and proprietary technical information.

Infrequent fediverse-inspired reminder that mutual aid requests are explicitly encouraged here (as are job searches from either direction, gofundmes and donation of goods or services).

If we're not here to care for each other, why are we here?

Migrated and to the new box. Everything seems up and running flawlessly.

I love it when a plan comes together!

So what’s the skinny on migrating an ActivityPub instance (say Mastodon) from one domain to another (eg. mastodon.ar.al to fediverse.ar.al)

Still no go? Or is there a way to do it finally without losing your whole social graph?
